Judith Le Harivel

Artist Statement

Humans as dominant species tend to use or control the natural world, but our survival is conditional on the thriving of all living beings. My work is inspired by the concept of a reciprocal relationship between humans and the natural world, which I explore mostly through the personification of nature as spiritual beings.

Artwork Artist Statement

For centuries humans have personified nature as deities, nymphs or spirits. Humans respected, worshipped and feared these beings, recognising the power they represented and acknowledging that humans do not have complete dominance over nature.
Part human, part fish, Sea Spirit represents the reciprocal relationship between humans and sea creatures. I am using a different casting technique to show the spirit as if underwater.

The Green Man is a forest god, pagan symbol of the arrival of spring and rebirth. In this partial relief I use a human face and traditional hawthorn leaves to represent this keeper of the woods and forests.

The ancient Greeks named the spirit of a tree, dryad. This relief is one of my ongoing series of works based on dryads as a symbol of the agency of the natural world.

I have made this artwork as a relief of a human/bird head, one of several experiments in representing spirits as human/animal hybrids.

Humans may be dominant, but the largest single living organism on earth is a fungus; its underground network of mycellum spanning 9 hectares of a forest in Oregon, USA. These cast reliefs are my take on 3 New Zealand fungi, celebrating their integral role in the development of life on earth. Their symbiotic relationship with plants releases nutrients for plants by breaking down dead, organic matter. (Artworks available singly or as a set.)
