Geoff Rankin
Artist Statement
For years I have been working with big lumps of kiln glass or obsidian (volcanic glass) using diamond saws and grinders then polishing with silicon carbide. I aim to capture pure form using simple lines. My sculpture often has three pieces that related to each other. Several have no formal base and can be viewed different ways adding interest.

These two forms in glass come from different kilns but they have a strong relationship to each other, My preference is for them to be viewed facing each other but they can be viewer other ways giving a different look.

Mexican rainbow obsidian on a base of Kaeo obsidian (natural New Zealand volcanic glass).
Artwork Artist Statement
This work depicts the head of a thinker in profile in it’s simplest form carved from Mexican rainbow obsidian (a natural volcanic glass). The colours appear when light hits the black polished surface at the right angle like oil in a puddle. Mounted on Kaeo obsidian from Northland obsidian has existed for thousands of years being the first glass used and traded by humans.

Whangarei kiln glass, carved with diamond tools then hand polished with silicon carbide.
Artwork Artist Statement
Worked from a large lump of Whangarei glass this form emerged. Like a lot of my work there is no formal base. The question is why should Sculpture only look good from three hundred and sixty degrees? Having no base the work can be viewed several different ways changing it’s look.

Glass from Auckland kiln then carved using diamond tools and polished with silicon carbide.
Artwork Artist Statement
Although this is a very dark glass it has a lovely iridescent quality and translucent edges when shown with good back lighting. Again I was looking for pure form. After it was finished and sitting on my bench I could see the likeness to a whale tail. Hence the name. In my opinion names are always an afterthought.
